Child Centered Play Therapy is a technique used in child counselling to assist children who are experiencing emotional difficulties. It is an expressive therapy using toys and play to allow the child to explore their emotional world. During this process, the child is guided by a trained play therapist who builds a strong therapeutic relationship and facilitates emotional expression.
Play therapy is a valuable option for children of all ages facing emotional or behavioral challenges. It can help with:
Trauma (including medical trauma)
Attention and focus issues
Low self-esteem
Nightmares and bedwetting
Anxiety and fear
Social skill difficulties
Grief and depression
Anger and aggression
Impulsivity and self-control
Sensory disorders
Parents and Caregivers are actively involved in the therapy process, strengthening family bonds and improving relationships. Your involvement is crucial to your child's healing and future development during difficult times.
Play therapy can be a powerful tool for supporting your child's emotional growth. Contact us to find out more and discuss if Child-Centered Play Therapy is appropriate for your family.
The following information provides an overview of the Play Therapy process:
Before beginning play therapy with your child, the Play Therapist will meet with parents or caregivers for an intake session, without the child present.
This session provides the therapist with an opportunity to understand the challenges your family is facing and to lay the foundation for the therapeutic process. During this time, a full history will be taken, and parents or caregivers are encouraged to ask any questions they may have.
Up to 45 minutes spent in session with your child, followed by 15 minutes for pack up and clinical notes.
Sessions will be scheduled weekly and will take place at the same time each week, unless otherwise discussed.
After every 4 - 6 sessions the parents/caregivers and the therapist will meet for a parent consultation to discuss and review progress. This is an opportunity for discussion while ensuring the child’s confidentiality is upheld at all times. We ask that children do not attend these consults.
This cycle continues after every 4-6 sessions, followed by a parent consultation. The length of the Play Therapy process varies with each case.
